ABSTRACT

Landfill leachate discharged directly to the environment poses various types of health and environmental hazards. In the present work, biological treatment of landfill leachate was investigated using upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) in terms of COD, phosphate removal. The UASB bioreactor was found to have a great potential for stabilizing landfill leachate. Among the parameters concerned were the COD, pH, EC, alkalinity, chloride, phosphate, hardness, Ca, Mg and sulphate. The COD removal was observed to be 35% for the landfill leachate during the batch mode study of the UASB reactor. Good removal efficiency for phosphate, sulphate, Ca, Mg and total hardness was also observed with the treatment of UASB reactor. The per cent removal of the sulphate concentration for the leachate was observed to be 64.75%. During the study, the per cent removal of the phosphate concentration of the leachate was found to be 41.59%.
