ABSTRACT

The wide applicability of genetic transformation over conventional breeding methods in development of useful traits is due to the latter being time consuming, cumbersome, laborious and has biological as well as genotypic constraints. However, lately much progress has been made in the area of genetic transformation of rice. Among a range of transformation methods available, Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation is the most used method due to its low copy number integration, precise transfer and single integration of the transgenes. Since most of the transgenes do not confer a visibly or morphologically detectable phenotypic change, marker genes are used for the convenient identification and selective propagation of the transformed cells.
