ABSTRACT

Sulphate reducing bacteria are anaerobic prokaryotes inhabiting diverse environment. They play a major role in biochemical cycle as well as in the bioremediation of effluents. A microbial consortium was developed and enriched on modified Postgate medium B under sulphate reducing conditions using sludge from paint industry treatment unit. Lead acetate paper test and H2S strip test were used for qualitative analysis of hydrogen sulphide produced. Bacterial precipitates were analyzed for the presence of sulphate. The sulphate reduction potential was found to be 70.81% indicating the presence and abundance of SRB species in the consortium.
