The Effect of Irrigation Interval on Yield, Yield Components and Water Productivity of Common Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) Cultivars in a Semiarid Area

ABSTRACT

The water requirement for dry bean depends on variety, growth stage, climatic conditions and irrigation management. To determine the effect of irrigation interval on the yield and yield components of four common bean cultivars, a field split plot experiment was conducted based on a randomized complete block design in three replications. Main plots included three irrigation intervals (4, 8 and 12 days), and sub-plots included four cultivars of common bean (Khomein, Sedeh, Saleh and E9). Pipe transmitted water to the furrows and the volume of irrigation water were measured using flow meters. Results showed that the maximum values of grain yield, pods per plant, grains per pod, plant height, 100-grain weight and biological yield were obtained from the 8-day irrigation interval. Results also showed that the water productivity of Sedeh and Saleh cultivars did not have significant difference in the different irrigation intervals. It can be concluded that when the water resource is unlimited, all the studied cultivars can be irrigated with 4 or 8 days intervals; but when the water is scarce, the irrigation interval can be increased to 12 days for Sedeh and Saleh cultivars.
