ABSTRACT

Indonesia was placed as the 3rd country worldwide in which tuberculosis sufferers were highest. Injectable Bone Substitute (IBS) paste loaded with streptomycin killed the bacteria. It also consisted of hydroxyapatite which was useful for the bone regeneration. This study was aimed at testing the performance of IBS paste in vitro, by using the antituberculosis test and cytotoxicity test using hepatocyte cell. The in vitro study conducted by this study had proven that the streptomycin could be released from IBS paste and killed the bacteria of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, shown by the clear zone of the antituberculosis test. Moreover, the cytotoxicity test resulted in a positive characteristic where IBS paste was not toxic and safe if implanted in human body.
