ABSTRACT
The effects of different sources and wavelengths of light (fluorescent light; and LED light–Blue, Red, White) were studied for biomass accumulation, lipid content and lipid profile on microalgae, Chlorella sorokiniana. It was found that biomass increased from 412±0.003 to 440±0.004 mg/l in blue light as compared to conventional fluorescent light. Whereas in white and red light biomass obtained was 420±0.002 and
402±0.002 mg/l, respectively. The total lipid content increased 30% in blue light and 9.3% in red light as compared to conventional fluorescent light. Whereas in white light, no significant increase or decrease in
lipid content was noticed as compared to fluorescent light. Major fatty acids detected in all the light conditions were C16 : 0, C16 : 1, C18 : 0, C18 : 1, C18 : 2 and C18 : 3. Highest proportion of saturated plus
monounsaturated fatty acids, best suited for quality biodiesel, were found in fluorescent light and blue light conditions. But quantitatively highest amount was recorded in blue and red light conditions.
