Consumer Preferences for a New Variety of Grapes (Vitis vinifera) Paras 61

ABSTRACT

The provision of new superior varieties of grapes, resulted from genetic resources selection that were preferred by consumers, was an effort to provide food choices for consumers, as well as the effort to substitute with the imported grapes. The grape variety of Paras 61 was a candidate for a new superior variety of grapes that had certain characteristics. The objective of the study was to identify consumer preferences for the new superior variety of grapes, Paras 61, so that the development potential of this type of grape could be given. A total number of 45 consumer respondents had participated as panelists for a sensory evaluation in this study. The results of the study showed that the panelists gave relatively high scores on the attributes of Paras 61, such as general appearance (5.91), berry size (5.89), taste (5.89), berry shape (5.84), pulp crispness (5.53) and peel colour (5.36), which showed that the consumers liked these attributes. The main characteristics of Paras 61 were having an oval berry shape with the berry size of 2.1-3 cm in length and 1.5-2.2 cm in diameter, peel colour of greyish dark purple, sweet taste and good crispness.
