ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major public health problem worldwide. This research was aimed at determining the effect of Garcinia mangostana L. extract on the destruction of liver structure and the decrease alanine
aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels of diabetic mice. Twenty-four mice male BALB/c strain were divided into six groups. Normal control group (KN) which was only induced with water, diabetic control group (KD) which was induced by streptozocin (STZ) five days consecutively, metformin control group (KM), the treatment groups of P1, P2 and P3 each by dose 50, 100 and 150 mg/kg bw of G. mangostana L. extract, respectively. G. mangostana L. extract was injected for 14 days by per-oral method. Destruction of liver tissue was measured using a light microscope with a magnification of 40 × 10, the liver samples of each mice were observed in three different views for each sample. Statistic analysis showed that extract of G. mangostana L. had decreased significantly (P<0.05) on the levels of ALT, AST, necrosis and swollen cells injury. Thus, it can be concluded that the extract can regenerate significantly on destruction of liver tissue and the decrease ALT and AST levels of diabetic mice.
