ABSTRACT
Forests of the Republic of Buryatia produce socio-economic and environmental benefits. These benefits
include valuable resources and carbon sequestration that involves a significant part of the world’s carbon
stock. Forests represent an ecological framework for conservation of ecosystem biodiversity and perform
many other biosphere functions. The value of a balanced approach to the assessment of forest resources
and their rational use is increasing due to continuously growing demand for these resources. This paper
provides a detailed study of physico-geographical characteristics of the Republic of Buryatia and zonal
distribution of the main forest-forming plantations of the region based on forest zoning. An ecological and
economic assessment of the condition and potential of the forests of Buryatia were performed to allow for
rational use of the forest resources of the republic for both the natural and industrial purposes.
