ABSTRACT

Plant faces various kinds of stress including biotic and abiotic stress during the vegetative and reproductive growth stages, in which drought is one of them. Drought causes the scarcity of water supply to the plant, hence, the metabolic process becomes slow at cellular level. Water deficit condition affects different metabolic processes in plant mainly cell water relation, opening and closing of stomata, chlorophyll synthesist, photosynthetic process which lead to reduced crop yield. Due to drought stress, production of ROS (H2)O2, 1O2 and OH-1) increased in chloroplast, mitochondria and peroxisome. The defensive response against oxidative stress requires ROS scavenging enzyme i. e. catalase, peroxidase and superoxide dismutase, etc. to reduce the toxic effect of ROS. Plant senses drought and accordingly initiates signalling process for appropriate response. This review is focusing on various aspects including water movement, compatible solutes, oxidative stresses and their results associated with drought conditions.
