ABSTRACT

Launaea procumbens (Roxb.) Ramayya and Rajagopal (LP), a glabrous and perennial herb with sessile and lobed leaves, belongs to family Asteraceae. In the present study, efforts were made to analyze its methanolic extract for the presence of different phytoconstituents. The present study was planned to identify the bioactive compounds in the methanolic extract prepared from aerial vegetative parts by GCMS. Plant extract (PE) from aerial parts of LP was prepared with methanol in soxhlet extraction assembly. Screening for phytochemicals was carried out as per standard methods. GC-MS analysis of the methanoic extract of LP was performed on a GC-MS equipment. The phytochemical tests showed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, tannins, saponins and terpenoids in methanolic extract of LP. GC-MS chromatogram of methanol extract revealed the presence of 17 different phytoconstituents with their respective retention time (RT). The spectra of the constituents were matched with NIST library in the Xcalibur software of GC-MS apparatus. Some of the identified components possessed pharmacological
actions. The present investigation revealed the presence of oxygenated hydrocarbons, alkane compounds, carboxylic acids, esters and predominantly terpenes and steroids in the methanolic extract of LP.
