ABSTRACT

Poultry sector is generating huge amount of chicken feather wastes, which fall in the category of keratinous
waste : rich in carbon, nitrogen and amino acids. These feathers are recalcitrant in nature and therefore
remain in the environment for longer period. However, several microbial communities ranging from
bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes were identified to synthesize keratinolytic enzymes possessing the
ability to degrade the feathers. These feathers can be modified into potential value-added products like
bioactive peptides, animal feed and organic fertilizer.
Key words : Poultry feathers, keratinolytic microorganisms, biodegradation, nitrogenous fertilizer
