ABSTRACT
Cyanobacteria are good source of a natural blue coloured pigment called phycobiliprotein (PBP). A statistical method called response surface methodology (RSM) was used for optimizing different physicochemical parameters for the increased production of phycobiliproteins by cyanobacterial isolate 13MNS2014; RSM used Box-Behnken design for optimizing three parameters, named, temperature, light intensity and pH, each with three levels. Biomass production (in respect of ratio of protein/chl. a) and total phycobiliprotein content were used to analyze the optimum physicochemical parameter conditions. The optimized conditions observed for cyanobacterial isolate 13MNS2014 were 30°C temperature, 7.5pH and 2000 lux light intensity at which the highest value of pigments and biomass production was obtained. At optimized conditions, PBP production increased upto 40%. This study signified the cyanobacterial isolate 13MNS2014 potential of enhanced PBP production under optimized conditions which may have possible industrial importance as PBP can be a good candidate to replace the chemically synthesized colorants or dyes.
