ABSTRACT

The biology of thrips, Thrips tabaci Lindemann was studied on onion cv. Sukhsagar at 27± 2°C during Feb.-April 2015 at the Directorate of Research, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Kalyani, Nadia, West Bengal. The incubation period ranged from 2 to 6 days. The first and the second instar larval period ranged from 2-3 and 4-6 days, respectively. The pre-pupal period ranged from 2-3 days. The pupal period ranged from 3-5 days. The pre-oviposition period was 1-3 days. The egg laying continued for 19-23 days. The post-oviposition period ranged from 2-3 days. The adults lived for 22 to 28 days and the total developmental period ranged from 14-20 days at 27°C±2°C. The number of eggs laid per female during her life time ranged from 18-42. A well knowledge about the biological and life habits of this insect pest will contribute to the better understanding of the relations between the crop and environment, and thus capable to design the effective strategies to control its population within an Integrated Pest Management Programme.
