ABSTRACT

Anaerobic digestion is one of most promising techniques for treatment of industrial wastewater. In addition to the treatment of wastewater, it also gives methane and hydrogen which could be used as renewable sources of energy for various purposes. But anaerobic digestion is a complex process involving various steps i. e. hydrolysis, acidogenesis, acetogenesis and methanogenesis. The efficiency of anaerobic digestion process is affected by various parameters like pH, temperature, mixing, HRT, etc. There are various methods available for anaerobic wastewater treatment, to name some are UASB, EGSB, CSTR, AnMBR, ABR, anaerobic lagoons, etc. In this paper, the basic process of anaerobic treatment and factors affecting anaerobic treatment efficiency are reviewed very briefly.
Key words :Anaerobic digestion, hydraulic retention time (HRT), organic loading rate (OLR), COD, BOD
