ABSTRACT

The Panchayat Raj is a south Asian political system mainly in India, Pakisatan and Nepal. The literal
meaning of panchayat is assembly (ayat) of five (panch) who are wise and respected elders chosen and
accepted by the villagers. Panchayati Raj is the backbone of Indian democracy and the lowest level of the
three tier system of the Panchayati Raj Institutions. The aim of this study was to study the personal,
familial and social profile of existing and preceding PRI members in Hisar district of Haryana state. Six
villages from Hisar II block were selected with the help of maharipanchayat app. The study was conducted
among 200 panchayat members (100 preceding and existing members each) through survey method. The
findings of the study elucidated that there was significant difference in age (‘t’=3.06), marital status (‘t’=2.93),
education (‘t’=5.64), family type (‘t’=3.79) and social participation (‘t’=5.14) of family members of both
categories of preceding and existing panchayat members.
