Essential Oil Characterization of Plant as Breeding Site of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus

ABSTRACT

Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is worldwide, and the incidence rate is throughout the year. DHF disease control is carried out by the management of vector Aedes egypti and Aedes albopictus through the larvae. The
existence of breeding site around the house is widely known, but not for A. albopictus yet, especially in Indonesia. Therefore, it is necessary to identify essential oil characters of plant as natural breeding site for
both the species. The purpose of this research was to characterize essential oil plants as breeding site A. aegypti and A. albopictus. This research is descriptive observational. Firstly, identify plants that become breeding site A. aegypti and A. albopictus from Bangkalan Regency in Madura. Secondly, determine the sample of plants which breed the mosquito site and analyze essential oil using Gas chromatography-Mass
Spectrometry (GC-MS). The characterized essential oil on five types of plants as breeding site showed that each type of plants had different essential oil components. Tetracosane was found in all plant species. The
highest content of tetracosane was found in Musa sp. (14.62). Meanwhile, Bambusa sp. was 6.57, Bromelia sp. produced 6.50, Cocoa sp. yielded 7.85 and Pandanus sp. formed 3.13. Besides tetracosane, the compounds which were found in five tested plants were octacosane, eicosane, octadecana, tetracosane, tricosane, hexacosane and heptacosane; included in alkanes group, whereas docosane was alkene group.
