ABSTRACT

Strawberry is herbaceous perennial in nature. The present study was done to investigate the influence of planting dates and patterns on growth, yield and quality of strawberry in sub-tropical conditions. The work was carried out with nine treatments and three replications. The treatments comprised three planting dates 25th October, 5th and 15th November with three geometrical planting patterns of single, double and double alternate row. It was observed that 5th November planting with double alternate row pattern significantly influenced the plant height (10.68 cm), leaf area (30.58 cm2), flowers (17.70%), number of fruits (24), fruit set (72.10%), fruit size (2.02 cm), fruit weight (10.89 g), fruit yield (120.3 g), TSS (10.28o B), total sugar (7.06%) and ascorbic acid (71.16%). Thus, the results revealed that planting date and pattern had a distinct effect on day light intensity and photo period. It can be suggested that planting date greatly influences the floral induction, yield and runner production, while planting pattern affects the quality and biochemical properties.
