ABSTRACT

Rauwolfia serpentina (L.) is a hub of more than 120 medicinally important terpenoid indole alkaloid mainly reserpine, ajmalicine, ajmaline, yohimbine, etc. Plant tissue culture is a potential technique for the large-scale production of these pharmaceutically important alkaloids. In the present study, significantly exorbitant callus induction efficiency was recorded in MS media fortified with 2 mg/l 2,4-D and 1 mg/l BAP as compared to other tested combinations within three weeks of culture with 100% efficiency. Further, different concentrations of yeast extract were evaluated for the efficient development of callus. Significantly higher biomass was observed on 0.75 g/l yeast extract supplemented culture medium. The present study will be useful in efficient callus development of R. serpentina.
