ABSTRACT
Thyroid nodules (or thyroid tumor) is a common disease in the wide-ranging population, but only a small number of them is finally diagnosed as cancers. The aim of this study was to discover and identify potential
serum biomarker for the purpose of using it to distinguish between benign and malignant tumors or for the purpose of using as prognostic serum biomarker or for monitoring patients with thyroid tumor. Seventytwo patients were divided into two study groups : patients group with malignant thyroid tumor included 45 subjects the median of age was 45 years and patients group with benign thyroid tumor included 27 subjects the median of age was 45 years. The blood samples were collected at Middle Euphrates Cancer Center and Dr. Emad Kareem Al.sabari clinic/Al.-Najaf Al.-Ashraf during the period from September 2018 until March 2019. Each patients group of the study was divided into sub-groups according to the age, gender and body mass index (BMI). The patients were diagnosed by physician based on history, clinical presentation and fine needle aspitate. Also, each patients group was divided into two groups : before and after thyroidectomy. Tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) were detected by using enzymelinked immunosorbent assay (ELIZA) method. The results of TIMP-1 revealed a significant (Pd0.05) increase
in concentration of TIMP in patients with malignant thyroid tumors and benign thyroid tumor group compared with healthy group. Also, the results of this study revealed a significant decrease (Pd0.05) of TIMP-1 in patients with malignant thyroid tumor after thyroidectomy compared with that before thyroidectomy. The results in this study indicated that there was significant decrease (Pd0.05) of TIMP-1 in patients with benign thyroid tumor after thyroidectomy compared with that before thyroidectomy. For the effect of age, sex and BMI on the TIMP-1, the results did not show significant effects on the TIMP-1.
