ABSTRACT

Gentamicin is widely used as an antibiotic for the treatment of gram negative bacterial infections. The present study was conducted in animal house of Biology Department, Faculty of Sciences, University of Kufa from the period between July 2018 and May 2019. The study was aimed at knowing the effects of gentamicin on the histological structures of ovaries of maternal rats and some organs of its prenatal fetuses such as liver and kidneys during 20 days post coitum in albino rats. The pregnant females were randomly divided into three main groups, comprising five rats for each group. The first group was control group which was given normal saline by IP injection from the first day of pregnancy till the end of experimental, the second and third groups were served as treated groups which were given dose 20 and 40 mg/kg/day of gentamicin, respectively. All pregnant rats were sacrificed on 20 days post coitum, the maternal ovaries and three fetuses used to study their livers and kidneys histologically. The dose 20 mg/kg/day of gentamicin caused congestion and necrosis in maternal ovaries compared with control group, whereas the dose 40 mg/kg/day of gentamicin caused in addition to these histological effect hemorrhage and disappeared of primary follicle compared with control group and treated group with 20 mg/kg/day of gentamicin. In kidney of fetus the dose 20 mg/kg/day of gentamicin caused deformation of glomerulus, proximal convoluted tubule degeneration and aggregation of lymphoid cells compared with control group, whereas the dose 40 mg/kg/day caused in addition to these histological effect proximal convoluted tubule necrosis and congestion compared with control group. In liver of fetus, the dose 20 mg/kg/day of gentamicin caused congestion degeneration in hepatocytes compared with control group, whereas the dose 40 mg/kg/day caused in addition to these histological effect hemorrhage and aggregation of lymphoid cells.
